Chocolate Covered Peeps

Alright, time for some honesty here. Are you ready?

This is not a Peep. It's not even close to a Peep.
First off, it's not the same shape as the original chicks. It's a flattened out version. Second, gone is the crispy sugar that gives the peep interest. Gone!
And finally, the inside of a normal Peep is white. Like a real marshmallow. The inside of the chocolate covered version: a mucus yellow.

That said, it tasted pretty good. Honestly, it's just a chocolate covered marshmallow. It's not like it could have been nasty. But I certainly wouldn't call it a chocolate covered Peep.

Even on a good day.

3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp

Is there a crisp revolution? The 3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp is possibly an improvement on the original. The crisp is light and soft and the chocolate truffle covering it is positively delicious. The whole bar is still bathed in the same delightful milk chocolate as the classic. However, I think the Truffle Crisp is an improvement on the original.

Now don't get me wrong. I love a 3 Musketeers as much as the next guy. Especially when I want chocolate on chocolate. However, the chocolate truffle is out of this world. It hits your tongue with a chocolicious explosion of happiness. The crisp offers up a pleasing crunch but is still soft and blends nicely into the taste. Sold as two Twix-style bars per package, you can relive the indulgence or share with a friend.

I would highly recommend trying this candy. It is an excellent innovation on the original and is sure to please any chocolate lover's craving.

Baby Ruth Crisp

If you love Baby Ruths but hate all those peanuts, this is the candy for you. The taste is exactly the same as a classic Baby Ruth but the texture is completely different. Gone are the peanuts glued together by caramel. Instead, you're created by a crispy wafer and caramel stacked on top of each other like a Kit-Kat.

The first bite sensation is strange. The taste is spot-on, as you would expect, but the texture is Baby Ruth gone Kit-Kat. Soft wafers stacked together with caramel and creme. It's very light and airy. However, despite the claim of peanuts on the package I did not taste any in the candy. Seeing as how the classic BR is comprised mostly of peanuts. It seems like an odd choice to do away with them completely in the Crisp version of the candy.

Despite the peanut mystery, I would still highly recommend the Baby Ruth Crisp to any BR lovers and especially those who love the taste but dislike the peanuts.

M&M's Premium: Chocolate Trio

Strolling through Target this evening I was looking for new and interesting candies. I came across the Chocolate Trio M&M's "with a NEW SHIMMERING SOFT SHELL." They are comprised of "tantalizing layers of milk, dark and white chocolates." I excitedly added them to the basket expecting a delicious treat later this evening. After dinner, I eagerly tore into the bag and popped the first one into my mouth, let the chocolate wash over my tongue.

But they are not good. The lack of a crunchy shell makes the entire candy feel like a semi-soft lump in your mouth. Instead of being the best of all chocolate worlds, none of them stand out individually. The chocolate all runs together and you get a generic chocolate taste. It's still chocolate and still pretty good chocolate to boot. However, nothing special.

The soft shell is a real sticking point for me.. The shell does shimmer a bit in the light. However, they look like those lumps of glitter and Elmer's glue I used to make in elementary school after I was done with the art project. It is not a visually appealing candy to eat. Nor do you get a satisfying crunch you've come to love and expect from M&M's. And I'm pretty sure they would melt in my hand.

All in all, a very disappointing purchase. I was hoping for a tri-chocolate 3-ring circus extravaganza. What I got was a hungover birthday clown.

Snickers Fudge

Snickers Fudge is touted "with peanut butter nougat & peanuts wrapped in milk chocolate." I was excited to try this confection because I love Snickers and I love fudge. I thought the two of them together would be a heavenly concoction of sweets.
My first thought upon biting into it, dry. It's a much dryer taste and consistency than I have come to expect from a Snickers bar. There is nothing gooey to greet your mouth with delicious sticky sweetness. The peanut butter is dry. The nougat is dry. The peanuts are peanuts. Nothing special.

What is most disappointing is I don't really taste the peanut butter. It's there, I see it. But I don't taste it. It is a dry, chocolatey candy. I much prefer the original and dark versions to this fudge disappointment.

I would have to say pass on Snickers Fudge. Especially when there are so many other delicious Snickers to enjoy out in the world. Give this one a pass.

Reese's Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

The dark chocolate takeover continues with Reeses Dark Chocolate joining the fray. The classic chocolate and peanut butter treat has been taken to the next level.

The dark shell is firmer than the original giving the candy almost a crunch as you bite into it. Then the cool peanut butter hits your tongue and you're in peanut butter cup heaven.

I have a great love for dark chocolate and prefer it to milk in most occasions and Reeses does not disappoint. The slightly bitter taste of the dark chocolate mixes with the sweet peanut butter improving upon the original.

This has been a wonderful addition to the Reeses product line and available dark chocolate candies. I would certainly recommend this to anyone who loves dark chocolate.

Nestle Aero

There it was. Sitting in an otherwise empty chocolate bar box at Giant was the Nestle Aero. I had to pick it up since I had never seen such a beast before. A chocolate bar with minty air bubbles? How could I resist.

Biting into the Aero was a strange sensation. The texture is weird and somewhat off putting. I like it to biting into a day old cake that's started to get slightly stiff. (Annie called it Styrofoam.) It tasted good. Not great but good. I think the texture really threw me for a loop. I just couldn't get over the grainy, mint bits mixed into the smooth Nestle chocolate.

The Aero is certainly not what I was expecting as I eagerly grabbed this strange, new treat from the random box housing it. I am not sure what I was expecting. Perhaps chocolate with a lighter, airy quality about it. Though the candy was exactly as it said on the wrapper.

Would I buy this again? Probably, it was pretty good once I got over the texture. All in all a strange find for a candy that is apparently big in Europe according to Wikipedia.

I would call it an acquired taste.

Milky Way Dark

Ok, so this one might not be as new or novel, but I had never had a Milky Way Dark before. Not being a huge fan of dark chocolate, but an occasional lover, I don't often by the dark candy bars. Mint 3 Musketeers being the exception. Swoon.

I was kind of shocked when I bit into the midnight Milky Way. It was not simply a Milky Way with dark chocolate instead of milk, but a completely different candy bar. Sure, the caramel was still there, and so was the nougat, but there was a fundamental difference - the nougat is white! White! Wondering what kind of blasphemy this was, I inspected the wrapper to discover that this substance is Milky Way Dark's "Vanilla Nougat." Hmmmmm.

Do I like it? Yeah, kinda. Yes, I mean, I suppose I do like it. It reminded me of a marshmallow, which gave the whole candy bar a flavor reminiscent of a s'more. But that's just not what I want when I buy a Milky Way. I want a ton of chocolate with a good, smooth helping of caramel, unfettered by peanuts (everyone knows that you only eat Milky Way when you're not quite in the mood for a Snickers). Milky Way Dark does not provide this sensation. Chocolate + vanilla + caramel unfortunately just isn't the same as chocolate + fluffy chocolate + caramel.

Now, to be perfectly clear, the Milky Way Dark is a perfectly delicious candybar (Carl called it "heavenly"). It's just not a Milky Way. You just have to know that going in. I didn't. I was surprised. It took the whole bar for me to even understand what I had just eaten.

In a phrase: delicious, but different.

Coconut M&Ms

Carl and I spent the weekend in Virginia Beach planning our upcoming wedding. On the way home, we decided to stop at a Sheetz for a bathroom break and to buy some cold drinks. While perusing the candy aisle, my life came to a crashing halt when I found these magical little morsels: Coconut m&m's.

Now, I have to say, I'm not in love with m&m's. I think they are pretty good, but they aren't something I gravitate towards in their pure form. Sometimes I do get cravings for the peanut or peanut butter variety, but the plain chocolate just doesn't quite cut it for me.

This limited edition coconut flavor though really drew me in. I love coconut. Sure, like everyone else, I hated it when I was a kid. Thank goodness for an adult's taste palette. Ever since I found Ciao Bella's amazing coconut sorbet, I have been on a coconut frenzy.

At first bite, the coconut in these candies was a little overpowering for me. The coconut flavor is in the hard shell coating, which makes the flavor quite strong, but mellows out as you continue eating. The more of these little babies I popped into my mouth, the more I liked them. It was a sweet, cool coconut flavor that left my mouth feeling clean and happy.

These are one limited edition item that I would recommend you unwrap before they go away. Don't miss out like you probably did when m&m's came out with their "Strawberried Peanut Butter" flavor. mmmmmmmmmmmm!
